The juxtaposition of text and photographs, seemingly unrelated to one another, mirrors the conflicting relationship between the protagonist and the past, which is seen as both a beloved shelter and a dystopian world. The very same apparent unconnectedness that characterises the narrative is the fulcrum of the story: the mind sometimes recollects dull or significant past events when triggered by elements blandly or obscurely related to them; it can enhance banal details whilst concealing others that are meaningful, and, moreover, it can fill the gaps in our memories with fears and fantasies, eroding the boundary between reality and imagination.
